Nickel Belt will remain as is.

Good news to report if you recall early last fall the commission had released a report that they were basically going to dismantle the riding of Nickel Belt. Myself along with Claude Gravelle and city councillor Claude Berthiaume mounted
a hard fought political fightback campaign  with petitions as well as public forums as well all three of us  made public/live presentations to the Commission  And on Tuesday the Commission reported that Nickel Belt will remain as is and  also we have  retained all 10 Northern ridings. We did lose Folyet to Algoma.   Wyman MacKinnon Vice Chair. Coniston Memorial Proposed Site.

Picture
Proposed Coniston Memorial Site... Due to vandalism, age and general disrepair of the current memorial in Centennial Park it was decided that this would be a great opportunity to transform the Memorial into something more prominent and visually appealing that everyone in Coniston can be proud of.  The updated Memorial plans are moving forward very well.   The concept and approval stage (and there were many required!) are complete.  We are now close to finishing the final plans and proceeding further on the fundraising required to complete the Memorial.  The overall  concept is to use items from the two existing Memorials and bring them together in a better location to build one prominent Memorial.  As well, new items will be added to compliment the area to make it a  unique, central focal point for all of Coniston to enjoy.  To view a PowerPoint of the concept  please go to www.conistonmemorial.weebly.com.  Contact Kirk Langdon for more information  Kirk.Langdon@casdsm.on.ca

Coniston Creek - Brook Trout.

Picture
Thanks to   The Coniston Community Action Network (CAN)  May 24th, they leadi a project
for restocking the Coniston creek with brook trout because it was originally a brook trout stream. Through colonization and industrialization the trout were depleted in the creek. The last known trout in the creek was in the mid 1940s, approximately 66 years ago. The CAN committee is trying to bring the stream closer to its original condition by reintroducing brook trout with support from
Xstrata Nickel and the Ministry of Natural Resources.  Xstrata Nickel was very supportive of the initiative and provided technical information indicating that water quality is suitable for brook trout, and offered additional technical support to this project.   MNR is also very supportive and are providing 3000 brook trout for stocking the creek. These brook trout are being supplied from  the Tarentorous Fish Culture Station in Sault Ste. Marie.  Students from the French and English schools in Coniston will take part in the  fish stocking at the site behind the curling rink in Coniston. Approximately 220  students were involved as well as members of MNR, CAN, Xstrata Nickel, Lions Club of Coniston, Ducks Unlimited and other volunteers.  Ducks Unlimited and The Lions Club volunteered to provide barbecued hot dogs and juice for the students as well as assisting with the fish stocking.
